Grass-Finished vs. Grain-Finished Beef: What’s the Difference?

Updated: Mar 4, 2025

"Which is better, grass-finished or grain-finished beef?" This is one of the most common questions we get at Double B Beef. The truth is the answer depends on personal preference. While both have their own merits, there’s no definitive evidence to say one is universally "better" than the other. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation out there about both options. Let’s set the record straight with some facts and explain why we’ve chosen a grass-fed, grain-finished approach at Double B Beef.

Understanding Grass-Finished Beef

Grass-finished beef comes from cattle that are raised exclusively on grass and forage throughout their lives. This beef is often leaner and has been shown to contain slightly higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which has shown some promise in supporting cancer prevention. These benefits are real, but the measurable differences compared to grain-finished beef are relatively small.

The Benefits of Grain-Finished Beef

Grain-finished cattle start out the same as grass-finished cattle, grazing on pasture and forage. The difference begins in the last 2-3 months of their lives when they are introduced to a nutrient-dense diet of grains, silage, and forage. This diet promotes faster muscle growth and enhances marbling, which contributes to the tenderness and flavor many people love in grain-finished beef.

Additionally, because grain-finished cattle gain weight more efficiently, they require less time and fewer resources to reach market weight compared to their grass-finished counterparts. This efficiency makes grain-finishing an economical and sustainable choice for many farmers.

How We Do Things at Double B Beef

At Double B Beef, we’re committed to raising our cattle as naturally and ethically as possible. Here’s how our process works:

  1. Birth and Early Life: Our cattle are born in open fields, where they roam freely and graze on natural forage.

  2. Summer Ranges: During the warmer months, they graze on summer pastures, finding their own food as nature intended.

  3. Winter Feeding: In the winter, when grazing isn’t possible, we provide feed either at a manger or scattered on the ground.

  4. Grain Finishing: At 16-18 months, the cattle come to our feedlot, where they’re introduced to a balanced diet of grain, corn silage, and alfalfa. All of these crops are grown right here on our farm. After 2-3 months, we carefully select the cattle to ensure they’re ready for processing.

This approach ensures our cattle are raised with care, given high-quality nutrition, and treated ethically every step of the way.

Why We Believe in Grass-Fed, Grain-Finished Beef
